What is the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek, also known as the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, is one of the most popular treks in Nepal. It takes you through diverse landscapes, including forests, terraced fields, and villages, offering spectacular views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himalayan ranges and surrounding views.

How do I get to the starting point of the ABC Trek?

The trek usually starts in Pokhara, a famous tourist city in central Nepal. You can reach Pokhara by bus, flight, or private vehicle from Kathmandu. You can spend one night in Pokhara, then take a short drive to the trek starting point.

Do I need a guide or a porter?

While it’s not strictly necessary to hire a guide or porter, having one can enhance your experience by providing valuable information about the local culture, flora, and fauna, and ensuring your safety. So we highly recommend trekking with a guide.

Are the permits necessary for the Annapurna Trek?

Of course, you will need two different permits: the TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) entry permit.

Where do I Stay during the ABC Trek?

There are several lodges and guesthouses along the route that offer accommodation and meals. After the Sinuwa, there are limited tea houses, so we have to make early reservations during the main trekking season. So we request you to book your trek to the Annapurna base camp.

Is the trek safe?

Yes, trekking in Nepal is generally safe if certain precautions are taken. The Annapurna Base Camp trek is not particularly dangerous, but it’s important to be aware of potential risks like altitude sickness, weather changes, heavy snowfall, and avalanches.

Is tipping necessary for the guide and porter?

Tipping is NOT mandatory, but it is highly customary and expected in the trekking industry. Tipping your trekking guide and porter is an important way to show appreciation for their hard work — especially on treks in Nepal, where tips make up a significant part of their income. The amount depends on the trek length, difficulty, and your satisfaction with their service.

How much tipping should I budget?

The amount for tipping depends on the trek’s length, difficulty, and your satisfaction with their service. Basically, you can tip for the guide, 12 to 15% and for the porter, 10 to 12% of your full payment for your trekking package.

Note: It is just for your idea about tipping your guide and porter, but if you are happy and satisfied with their services, you can tip them more than this. Tips are always expected in the tourism sector of Nepal.
