Hike to Tilicho Lake (4,920 m)

However, Tilicho Lake is the highest-altitude lake in Nepal. This is becoming a more popular trekking trail in the Annapurna Region. This beautiful trekking route goes along the Marshangdi River through the remote valley of Manang (also known as the district behind the mountains). It is passing through beautiful villages and old and historical monasteries.

Annapurna Circuit Trek, Thorong La Pass
The summit of Thorong La Pass (5416 m) is a key point on the way to the Annapurna trek.

Thorong La Pass via Tilicho Lake

From Manang, our journey goes through Khangsar. And follow the Khangsar Khola to reach the beautiful Tilicho Lake. We will enjoy a perfect view of the lake and Tilicho Peak at 7,134 m. After that, it descends to Siri Kharka and then follows the different trekking trails to reach the Yak Kharka at 4,050 m. It is the joining point of the classic (Annapurna Circuit) Thorong La Pass Trek route. From the Yak Kharka, the trail leads us to continue to Thorong La Pass at 5,416 m. Then descend to Muktinath and Jomsom, then fly out to Pokhara.

Tilicho Lake with Annapurna Circuit Trek Difficulty Level

The Tilicho Lake with the Annapurna circuit trek is moderate to challenging. The trail is rough and narrow, and some parts are slippery and icy. In some places, there is rock falling, so we need to be careful walking on the way to Tilicho. After the Thorong La Pass, the trail is steep downhill, and it will be slippery too. So trekking during the winter and monsoon seasons is more challenging.

But it is possible to trek the Annapurna circuit during the monsoon season, too.  Yes, it is also challenging due to the high altitude. The Tilicho Lake altitude is 4,925 meters, and the Thorong La Pass is 5,416 meters. Of course, you have to bring warm clothes and sturdy shoes for this trek. You have to be physically and mentally fit for this trek.

Best Time to Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass

The best time to visit the Tilicho Lake and Annapurna Circuit Trek is the autumn season (September to November) and the spring season (March to May). These months are best for trekking and hiking. The monsoon and winter months are not excellent for the Tilicho Lake trek due to the mud and ice. But it is possible to do the Annapurna Circuit Trek. You can fully enjoy your holiday from this highest-altitude lake and the biggest high pass with the mind-blowing Himalayan vistas and flora and fauna of this trekking route.

Food and accommodations

Accommodations: There are comfortable teahouses available during the trek. Most of the guest houses along the trek have private rooms with private bathrooms, but in some places it is possible only to share bathrooms. In peak season, crowds are large, so not all places have excellent accommodations. Typically, these accommodations are found after the Manang.

Food and Drink: Teahouses offer a variety of meals along the trek route. Including typical Nepali food like dal bhat, there are many options to choose from on the food menu, like pizza, burgers, pasta, noodles, and pancakes. For drinking water, we highly recommend bringing good water bottles and water purification tablets or filters for safe drinking water.

Itinerary

Day 1, Arrival at Kathmandu airport (1400m) and transfer to hotel.

We, Himalaya Darshan Treks, heartily welcome you and your group to Nepal. One of our company staff will take you to your hotel in Kathmandu. The person will be waiting outside the baggage hall of the Tribhuwan International Airport, Kathmandu, holding an A4-size paper with your name and our company name. Therefore, you have to look for that person for your pickup from the airport.

Day 2, Drive to Besisahar to Jagat (1,300m).

We will begin our trips this morning after breakfast with a drive through the picturesque Nepalese countryside to Besisahar (850 m) by tourist bus. Afterward, we will again drive to Jagat (a small hill in the footsteps of Annapurna and Manaslu) by jeep. (Full-board accommodation at a tea house)

Day 3, Trek to Dharapani (1,860m).

After breakfast, we’ll take a one-and-a-half-hour rocky trail trek to Chamje hamlet, a small rural population surrounded by bamboo bushes with a primary school. Our adventure continues with a suspension bridge across the Marshyangdi River just after leaving Chamje.

Before entering the Manang district, just before reaching Tal village, you will see a waterfall, rocky hills, trails, and a small teashop. This is a lovely community on the riverbank with a stunning waterfall view. You’ll cross the river and continue trekking through the cliffs above it to Dharapani village, where we’ll spend the night. (On a full-board basis, spend the night at a tea house.)

Day 4, Trek to Chame (2,670m).

Bagarchhap is about an hour’s walk from Dharapani. This lovely village may see the first glimpse of Mt. Annapurna II. On this day, you will pass through a few steep forested landscapes and multiple landslides; nonetheless, keep your eyes out for some spectacular views of prominent Himalayan peaks.

On your way to Chame on this day, you’ll pass through some traditional Tibetan villages (2670 m). Chame is Manang’s district headquarters and one of the most picturesque Himalayan settlements, with near views of Mt. Lamjung and Annapurna II (full-board accommodation at a tea house).

Day 5, Trek to Upper Pisang (3,300m).

Another beautiful stroll through a narrow, steep trail that follows the riverbank will lead you to the settlement of Bratang, where you can stop for tea. Thereafter, we followed the forested walk and rough trails for an hour before crossing the suspension bridge and arriving at Dhukur Pokhari for lunch.

This little village will see the first view of Pisang Peak and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. After lunch, we’ll walk for an hour to reach our next destination, Pisang hamlet. (Full-board accommodation at a tea house)

Day 6, Trek to Manang village (3,540m).

Today, the Annapurna Range shields the drier upper route from the monsoon’s full force. For a portion of the year, the people of this region herd yaks and grow vegetables.

The trail continues from Mungji to adjacent Manang, passing through the scenic but largely hidden settlement of Braga (3475 m). (Full-board accommodation at a tea house)

Day 7, Acclimatization Day.

In Manang, we spent the day acclimating. We spent the entire day doing beautiful day hikes and marveling at the breathtaking vistas around the village; daytime is the optimum time to gain altitude.

The charming community of roughly 500 flat-roofed dwellings is nestled amid some outstanding landscapes—Annapurna II, Annapurna III (7555 m), and Gangapurna (7454 m) to the south; Tilicho (7132 m) and the Grand Barrier to the west; and Chulu West (6583 m) and Chulu East (6059 m) to the north. We return to our lodging and retire for the night at the end of the day. (Full-board accommodation at a tea house).

Day 8, Trek to Shree Kharka (3,860m).

From the Manang village, the trail leads us to a different valley. From here, we left the popular Annapurna Circuit trekking trail. We’ll continue on a lovely level track until we reach the Marsyangdi River, then ascend to Shree Khark (3,860 m) after crossing the river and passing through the Khangsar hamlet. Along the trip, you’ll get the opportunity to see some stunning countryside. (Full-board accommodation at a tea house).

Day 9, Trek to Tillicho Base Camp (4,150m).

The trail leads to a higher region in Tilicho Lake after Shree Kharka. The trail is narrow as it passes through a landslide area, with a few downhill sections and a gentle zigzag ascent as it approaches Tilicho Base Camp. During the walking session, you will be able to see Tilicho Peak, Gangapurna, and other beautiful mountains. (Full-board accommodation at a tea house).

Day 10, Hike to Tilicho Lake (4,920m), and Trek back to Siri Kharka (4,060m).

Today is a long, challenging day, but it is a wonderful day for this trip. So we have to start walking early in the morning; the trail is heading up to Tilicho Lake (4,920 m). It’s the highest-altitude lake in the world. You will fully enjoy your holiday, seeing this beautiful lake at this altitude. Then the trek descends to Shree Kharka. (Full-board accommodation at a tea house).

Day 11, Trek to Ledar (4,200m).

We will continue our journey to Yak Kharka/Ledar (4,200 m), walking with beautiful scenery. (Full-board accommodation at a tea house).

Day 12, Trek to Thorong High Camp (4,925m).

Another short day with views from above takes you to Thorong Phedi’s pass for lunch. A small yet bustling community that caters to the requirements of hikers and climbers. It is located at the base of the Thorong La, and the trails continue to ascend to the top of the Thorong La. We trek for an hour after lunch to reach a high camp (4800 m) for the night. (On a full board basis, spend the night at a tea house).

Day 13, Trek to Muktinath (3,800m).

As well as crossing the Thorong La Pass, today is a long and demanding day (5416 m). You’ll have to get up early and eat breakfast since you’ll need to cross that pass on time before the weather becomes terrible. The trail continues increasing until it reaches the top of Thorong La, which takes around three and a half hours from the High Camp accommodation. You will be treated to a magnificent mountain view from the summit.

After a long descent, we arrive at the first teahouse in the Chabarbu. We will have to stop for lunch. The trail continues to descend to Muktinath after lunch. Muktinath is a well-known Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage place. (On a full board basis, spend the night at a tea house).

Day 14, Drive to Pokhara transfer to hotel.

Today, we woke up to the beautiful sounds of temple bells and traveled to the Muktinath Temple region, a well-known pilgrimage location.

After breakfast, we prepared to drive to Pokhara. It is a long drive through many beautiful places and settlements to reach Pokhara. Transfer to the hotel.

Day 15, Drive to Kathmandu.

Returning to Kathmandu entails a 7-hour trip through the Trisuli River and via numerous towns. You can spend your time relaxing or shopping for souvenirs to take home.
