Nar Phu Valley Trek
The Nar Phu Valley Trek is the best “time travel” trip you can take in 2026. This small area is still a haven for real Tibetan Khampa culture, even though the main Annapurna Circuit is becoming more modern. Nar and Phu were closed to outsiders until 2002, when they were hidden behind the giant peaks of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges. These villages kept a way of life that has been the same for hundreds of years.
The trek through the Nar & Phu Valley combines high peaks and passes, glaciers, remote villages, narrow canyons, and lovely forests. Additionally, you will encounter wonderful rock formations, yaks, gompas, and unique ethnic Tibetan cultures. The trek will provide you with a breathtaking view of the surrounding natural beauty. Nar Phu Valley is a naturally beautiful village that is also a hidden tourist spot.
This trek offers a culture that is both typical and natural, along with opportunities to observe various wild and domestic animals. There are numerous stunning white mountains, rivers, lakes, snow leopards, and deer to behold. We could see superior mountain vistas such as the Annapurna Himalayan Range, Tilicho Peak, the Manaslu Range, and Pisang Peak.
Nar Phu Valley Trek Highlights
- Explore the hidden valley of Manang Nar Phu Village.
- Trek into a remote part of Nepal that few travelers get to see.
- Your holiday in archaic villages that have seen little transformation over the centuries
- Appreciate giant views of Annapurna II, Himlung Himal, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak
- Experience a part of the Tibetan plain that drops down into Nepal.
- Have the chance to glance at the ever-mysterious snow leopard.
- Observe a Tibetan-derived culture, with unique and colorful prayer stones and monasteries
Explore the Nar and Phu villages.
You will meet different types of people during the trek. Most of the residents are Gurung, along with a mix of other ethnic groups. But when you arrive in Nar Phu village, only you can meet Lama, Botia, and those people who live in the mountain region. They eat what they grow, such as potatoes, barley, buckwheat, and many vegetables.
They have lots of yaks & sheep. The region’s people are Buddhist, they speak their languages, and they have typical dress-up thick clothes made of yak & sheep wool. They have their own local cultures, like dances, songs, and special occasions.
Why Nar Phu Is Popular Right Now:
The Rain-Shadow Advantage: Nar Phu is in the Himalayan rain shadow, which is different from most of Nepal. This makes it the best place to go trekking during the monsoon season (June to August), when the rest of the country is cloudy, but the trails are dry, and the skies are clear in this rain shadow area.
History in Action: The stone-walled villages of Phu Gaon and Nar are cultural “time capsules” where you can see ancient Bon and Buddhist rituals in their purest form. These villages are home to descendants of Tibetan warriors.
Elite Views: Face-to-face panoramas of Himlung Himal, Annapurna II, and the dramatic Kang La Pass (5,320 m).
Nar Phu Valley Trek: Best Time 2026
The Nar Phu Valley Trek is best done in the fall (September to November) and spring (March to May), when the weather is at its best. The best views and most stable weather are in the fall, when the rhododendrons bloom. In the spring, the trails become more rugged. However, because Nar Phu lies in a Himalayan rain shadow, it is also a premier monsoon trekking destination (June to August), offering dry, lush paths and total solitude when other Nepal routes are closed. For adventurers seeking to cross the high-altitude Kang La Pass (5,320 m) safely, the clear skies of October remain the gold standard.
Last Thoughts: A Sanctuary for the Soul
The Nar Phu Valley is not just a hike; it is a pilgrimage into a slowly disappearing world. In a world of digital noise, the silence of the Phu canyons and the chanting of monks at Tashi Lhakhang offer a profound mental reset. If you are looking to escape the “trekking highways” and find the raw, rugged heart of the Himalayas, Nar Phu is your dream destination for 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions for Nar Phu Valley Trek
Why is Nar Phu often called the “Forbidden Valley” of the Annapurna?
Nar Phu was entirely closed to foreigners until 2002, and even today, it remains a restricted area requiring a special permit and a mandatory licensed guide. This isolation has acted as a time capsule. Unlike the developed Annapurna Circuit, the villages of Nar and Phu are inhabited by descendants of Tibetan Khampa warriors. Here, you won’t find souvenir shops; instead, you’ll find medieval stone longhouses, 800-year-old monasteries like Tashi Lhakhang, and a lifestyle dictated by yak herding and the high-altitude seasons.
Is the culture in the Nar Phu Valley the same as in Upper Mustang?
While both areas follow Tibetan Buddhist culture, Nar Phu offers a more rugged, “living” experience. While Mustang is famous for its desert-like caves and kingdom history, Nar Phu is defined by its narrow, dramatic canyons and the Narpa language, which is unique to these two villages. It feels less like a museum and more like a hidden fortress tucked between the Annapurna and Manaslu massifs.
Can I trek Nar Phu during the summer monsoon?
Actually, yes! Nar Phu lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, similar to Upper Mustang and Dolpo. While the lowlands of Nepal experience heavy rains, the valley remains relatively dry and vibrant. Trekking here in the summer offers a unique advantage: the high-altitude meadows are carpeted in wildflowers, and the “off-season” means you will likely have the entire Kang La Pass to yourself. It is one of the few elite-level treks in Nepal that is viable—and beautiful—during the monsoon.
Is the Kang La Pass harder than the Thorong La Pass?
While Thorong La (5,416 m) is higher, many trekkers find Kang La (5,320 m) more physically demanding. The ascent from Nar is steep and relentless, and the descent into Ngawal is a “scree-run” that tests your knees. However, the reward is superior: the view from Kang La is widely considered the most dramatic in the Annapurna region, offering a face-to-face look at the Great Barrier peaks that you simply cannot see from the main Circuit trail.
Itinerary
Day 1, Arrival in Kathmandu Airport (1,400m) and transfer to hotel
We, Himalaya Darshan Treks, heartily welcome you and your group to Nepal. One of our company staff will take you to your hotel in Kathmandu. The person will be waiting outside the baggage hall of the Tribhuwan International Airport, Kathmandu, holding an A4-size paper with your name and our company name. Therefore, you have to look for that person for your pickup from the airport. Your check-in at the hotel.
Day 2, Drive to Dharapani (1,860m) 8 - 9 hrs.
Early in the morning, we pick you up from the hotel, and we drive for a beautiful trip to the hilltop village of Besisahar by tourist bus through the Prithivi Highway. We will have lunch here, and then after lunch, we will board a local vehicle from Besisahar. Along the route to Dharapani, we’ll also see fields of rice and potatoes, alpine forests, waterfalls, cliffs, and a few suspension bridges.
Day 3, Trek to Koto (2,600m), 5 - 6 hrs.
Early in the morning, we set out on our trip across the mountainous terrain and pine and fir forests. A little challenging for today. We will enjoy the whitewashed monastery, the magnificent Himalayas of Annapurna II, Manaslu, Lamjung Himal, and Himalchuli that have guarded the area since time immemorial, and the distinctive lifestyles in the villages of Timang and Danaque. Next, we will ascend and descend to reach Koto.
Day 4, Trek to Meta (3,570m), 6 - 7 hrs. Naar-Phu Valley Restricted Area Permit Entry.
We will begin our trip on a steep, winding path through a forested area. The deep gorge Nar Phu Khola provides shade for most of today’s hikes. The route passes numerous scales of hand-sawn timber camps and caves as it ascends sharply above the river through a silent jungle of rocks, pine, and bamboo. Detour downstream to a modest yet attractive riverside hot spring after crossing the Phu Khola. Before reaching Meta, the trail makes a stunning U-turn under a waterfall.
Day 5, Trek to Kyang (3,830m), 5 - 6 hrs.
The trip to Kyang is a unique day because it takes place on flat terrain up to Junam and stays that way until the lower village of Chyako (the Khampa settlement). We travel uphill and downhill, via various chortens, until arriving in Kyang. Beautiful mountain vistas of the Gyaji Kang, Pisang Peak, and Annapurna II mark the conclusion of the day before the final difficult ascent.
Day 6, Trek to Phu (4,080m), 5 hrs.
Inching down a nerve-wracking portion of the track carved out of the cliff face, you leave Kayang and rapidly swing into the arid, desert-like gorge of the Phu Khola. After passing the submerged rock and a tiny campsite, we will work our way steeply down the hill along the riverbank. The gorges and canyon lands provide the best view of the distinctive, vibrant chortens.
On Khaki Hill, keep a lookout for blue sheep that are grazing. After passing the Phupi Gyalgen Gate, the trail contours around the degraded hillside before descending to the cluster of chorten next to the bridge. You catch your first glimpse of Phu’s three villages through this historic gate.
Day 7, Acclimatization Day.
A quick climb up to the village offers beautiful views of the valley. Additionally, a strenuous hike to Himlung Base Camp is also an option.
Day 8, Trek to Naar (4,150m), 6 - 7 hrs.
The route circles back to Chyako, passing the settlement. The trail climbs again after passing under the bridge and continues to do so all day. One of the longer days of the walk is also today to reach Naar Village
Day 9, Trek to Ngawal (3,660m) Via Kang-La (5,322m), 6 - 7 hrs.
Today is a long and hard day; the Kang La is not a steep pass, but there is snow on the pass, and the altitude is having an impact. Today, we leave early in the morning for the spectacular Kang La Pass, which offers a stunning view of Pisang Peak, Annapurna II, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak. After crossing the pass, we will descend while admiring the magnificent surroundings and cinematography, passing yak and sheep shelters until we reach Ngawal.
Day 10, Trek to Manang (3,540m), 4 - 5 hrs.
With the beautiful backdrop of Pisang Peak, Gandharva Chuli, Annapurna II, Gangapurna, and Annapurna III, it’s a simple day to get to Manang. Along the bank of the Marsyangdi River, we will walk across a level valley. We will pass a pine forest, a farming terrace, and the lovely village of Braga on the way. We can stop at monasteries (ancient and historical) in Braga along the way, and then we will reach Manang village.
Day 11, Rest Day
This is your rest and relaxing day, so wake up late and have a late breakfast. Around Manang, there are many highlighted places for your day hikes. You are free to hike and explore the area at your own pace after breakfast.
Day 12, Trek to Chame (2,670m), 6 - 7 hrs.
Today we had breakfast a little bit earlier, and then our trek continued back down to Chame. We traversed numerous picturesque locations and marveled at the breathtaking Himalayan vistas.
Note: From Manang, if you have enough time, you can continue your trekking to Annapurna Circuit Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), then trek down and continue to Jomsom and fly out to Pokhara. Or you can continue your trekking to Tilicho Lake.
Day 13, Drive to Besisahar 5 -6 hrs
Early in the morning, we will start our driving journey to Besisahar by Jeep, through the bumpy road. It takes a long drive to reach Besisahar.
Day 14, Drive to Kathmandu by tourist bus transfer to hotel.
After breakfast at the hotel, drive along the banks of the Marsyangdi and Trishuli Rivers, passing through rice fields, terraced farms, valleys, and delightful views of the mountainous areas and mountains. We arrived in Kathmandu after a 5/6-hour drive by tourist bus.
