Dolpo Region Treks
The Dolpo Region Treks is one of the most popular trekking regions in Western Nepal. It lies in the Dolpa district in the Karnali zone. There are two parts to it. They are Lower Dolpo and Upper Dolpo. Upper Dolpo is a restricted and deserted area of Nepal. The Dolpo Region is the largest area, along with Shey-Phoksundo National Park. It is the largest national park in our country, Nepal, and the best for Himalayan treks.
Dolpo is a famous valley with fascinating villages, as well as being renowned for its mysteries, scenery, and peace. There are more than 130 old and historical monasteries and Gompas. The highlights of the Dolpo Region include rivers, stunning mountain views, adventurous high passes, wildlife scenery, Shey-Gompa, and Phoksundo Lake.
The Dolpo Region is known as the “Land of the Snow Leopard.”
Dolpo is the best place for the rare wildlife, the snow leopard. Shey Phoksundo National Park and Kanchenjunga Conservation Area have the most snow leopards. So, Dolpo is best for travelers who love wildlife and want to see it. The quiet and solitude of Shey Phoksundo National Park make it a safe place for these rare animals, unlike the busy trails of Annapurna. If you are also interested in seeing this rare wildlife, join us for our Dolpo region treks.
Why Should You Book a Trek in the Dolpo Region?
Dolpo is one of the least crowded and least-visited trekking areas in Nepal, which makes it perfect for serious trekkers and adventure travelers. We carefully curate our Dolpo trekking packages, which feature the following highlights:
- Real Tibetan Buddhist and Bon Po culture
- Amazing high passes, alpine lakes, and empty plateaus
- Expert local guides and all the help you need with logistics
- Few tourists and clean trails
- Dolpo goes above and beyond what you would expect from a premium, once-in-a-lifetime Himalayan trekking experience.
1. Would it be possible for me to go trekking alone in the Dolpo area?
Normally, you need 2 people to get a restricted area permit (RAP), so you can’t go trekking alone in the Dolpo region. The Nepalese government needs at least two trekkers in a group and a licensed trekking guide to protect the delicate Bon-Po culture and keep people safe in this remote wilderness. To get the permits, you need to go into the restricted areas. You will need to either join a group or find a trekking partner through an agency.
2. How difficult is the Upper Dolpo Trek compared to Everest Base Camp?
The Upper Dolpo Trek is significantly more challenging and remote than the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek. While EBC boasts a well-established “teahouse” infrastructure, the Upper Dolpo Trek is a lesser-known adventure that frequently necessitates camping. You will frequently trek above 4,000 meters and cross several high passes exceeding 5,000 meters. It requires a high level of physical fitness and prior high-altitude trekking experience.
3. How many “best” trekking routes are in the Dolpo region?
The best trekking routes in the Dolpo region are the Upper Dolpo Trek, the Phoksundo Lake Trek, and the Lower Dolpo Trek. Additionally, the Upper Dolpo to Jomsom Trek, the Jumla to Upper Dolpo Trek via Kagmara La Pass, and the Rara Lake Trek are also recommended. So you can choose your most suitable trek in the Dolpo region for an off-the-beaten-path trek in Nepal.
