The Annapurna Base Camp Trek, also known as the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek, is one of the most popular treks in Nepal. It takes you through diverse landscapes, including forests, terraced fields, and villages, offering spectacular views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himalayan ranges and surrounding views.
The Annapurna base camp trek usually takes about 7 to 14 days, depending on the chosen route and adaptation needs. Each day unfolds with discoveries as you traverse diverse landscapes and encounter nature at its most pristine. ABC Trek is known as very flexible, so you can do this trek on your time frame.
Well, it is the right question. The Annapurna Base Camp trek is easier than the Everest Base Camp trek. Everest base camp is more challenging than Annapurna base camp due to the high altitude, oxygen level, and remoteness. The highest altitude of the Annapurna base camp is 4130 meters, and the Everest base camp is 5364 meters above sea level, so if we compare these two popular treks, there is no doubt that trekking to Everest base camp is harder than to ABC.
The best time to trek to Annapurna Base Camp is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons. In spring (March to May), the road is dotted with vibrant azaleas, and the weather is mild and pleasant. Autumn (September to November, December) has clear skies, beautiful mountain views, and pleasant temperatures. These seasons create the perfect conditions for trekking, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the Himalayas.
Finally, the ABC Trek costs depend on your group size, the duration of the day, and the types of services. So we at Himalaya Darshan Treks offer some different packages, such as budget packages, full board packages, and service packages. Likewise, we also provide a trek guide or porter hire service. Normally, the cost ranges from $565 to $1050 per person.
The trek usually starts in Pokhara, a famous tourist city in central Nepal. You can reach Pokhara by bus, flight, or private vehicle from Kathmandu. You can spend one night in Pokhara, then take a short drive to the trek starting point.
While it’s not strictly necessary to hire a guide or porter, having one can enhance your experience by providing valuable information about the local culture, flora, and fauna, and ensuring your safety. So we highly recommend trekking with a guide.
Of course, you will need two different permits: the TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) entry permit.
There are several lodges and guesthouses along the route that offer accommodation and meals. After Sinuwa, there are limited teahouses, so we have to make early reservations during the main trekking season. We recommend booking your trek to Annapurna Base Camp early.
If you take certain precautions, trekking in Nepal is generally safe. The Annapurna Base Camp trek is not particularly dangerous, but it’s important to be aware of potential risks like altitude sickness, weather changes, heavy snowfall, and avalanches.

In October 2019, we trekked to Annapurna Base Camp with Himalaya Darshan Treks Pvt Ltd, my sixth trip to Nepal, but the first for my travel companion. We are both 70 years old. We recommend Gyan Katuwal and Himalaya Darshan Treks for their careful planning, route and environmental knowledge, the cultural experiences they provide along the way and their very good care of us.
Gyan was our guide and Bhim Rai our porter. Trekking with them gave us cultural and environmental experiences and knowledge. They worked together with us, so that we felt like a team. Gyan is a superb planner, always thinking ahead, and mindful of our ability and needs. We enjoyed their company and felt safe with them both.
Gyan has planned and safely led my last three treks, in 2010, 2017, and now 2019, from airport pickup to airport dropoff. He manages all permits required, internal bus or plane travel, advises on packing, good trekking routes for the season, overnight stops, and excursions. The Himalayan Darshan Treks all-inclusive package is cost effective, does all the hard tasks of trekking arrangements, so that our holiday began on arrival in Kathmandu.
My favourite area to trek is the Annapurna Conservation Area. Our destination was the Annapurna Sanctuary, inside the semicircle of the beautiful Annapurna mountains. You can be at the base (4130m) of Annapurna 1, an 8000 metre peak, and the 10th highest mountain in the world after four or five days trekking, and with little effect from altitude. En route to Pokhara to begin the trek, we visited Lumbini on the border with India, for two days; Lumbini is the birthplace of Buddha and a World Heritage Site.
