In the Kanchenjunga Region, nowadays you can do a comfortable teahouse trek. Five and 5/6 years ago, a camping trek was possible. It was hard and expensive, too. But now the teahouse trek is simple and cheaper, which makes the trekkers’ journey more convenient and easier. Teahouses are owned by local people. The accommodation in this region is normal with twin beds. The toilets are shared on a shared basis, but now at Ghunsa, there is a separate bathroom with a 24-hour running hot shower, available only at a few guest houses. Food is typical Nepali Dal Bhat, and in most places, you can choose from a menu that offers many options.
The good news is that most of the places in the Kanchenjunga region have mobile networks now. Ghunsa village has a mobile network with Nepal Telecom. So you can send text messages, and a 2G network also works. Likewise, Ghunsa has wifi, so you can call/chat with your friends and family.
Sekhthum and Ghunsa have micro hydropower, while most other places will have solar power. So, we highly recommend bringing it back up. The backup can be charged where there is adequate electricity, mostly in Ghunsa village. Additionally, you can charge solar devices in areas with reliable power.

How long does the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek take?
The KBC Trek typically takes around 18 to 21 days to complete. This includes time for acclimatization and exploring the surrounding areas (Kathmandu to Kathmandu).
What is the cost of the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek?
The cost of the KBC Trek can vary depending on the trekking agency, the services included, and the duration of the trek. We, Himalaya Darshan Treks, offer a budget package of USD 1275 p/p to a full board package of USD 2,050 p/p.
What permits are required for the trek?
You will need a Kanchenjunga Trek Special Permit (Restricted Area Permit), which costs USD 20 per week, and a Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP), which costs NPR 2,000. With this permit, you will be allowed to visit the Kanchenjunga Region.
Is it necessary to trek with a guide and porter?
Of course, a guide is necessary for the restricted trekking area. We also highly recommend group trekking with a guide. Your guide can help navigate the trails and provide valuable information about the region. Likewise, a porter can carry your heavy backpack, allowing you to enjoy the trek more comfortably.
Tipping is NOT mandatory, but it is highly customary and expected in the trekking industry. Tipping your trekking guide and porter is an important way to show appreciation for their hard work—especially on treks in Nepal, where tips constitute a significant part of their income. The amount depends on the trek length, difficulty, and your satisfaction with their service.
The amount for tipping depends on the trek’s length, difficulty, and your satisfaction with the guide and porter’s service. In the Kanchenjunga region, it is customary to tip the guide 18 to 20% and the porter 15 to 18% of the total cost of your trekking package.
If you’re happy with your guide and porter’s service, you can tip them more than this. Tips are always expected in the tourism sector of Nepal.
