The Ice Lake, also known as Khicho Tal, is a stunning high-altitude lake in the Manang Valley of Nepal. Situated at approximately 4,620 meters (15,157 feet), the lake is often frozen in winter due to its altitude, giving it its name. It is a popular side trek for those on the Annapurna Circuit (For acclimatization day), offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. Like Annapurna II, III, IV, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Chulu range, and many snowcapped mountain peaks.

Manang to Ice Lake Distance

The day hike to Ice Lake typically starts from the villages of Manang or Braga and takes about 8 to 9 hours round trip. It’s a challenging hike with a significant elevation gain of about 1100 meters, ascending and descending, making it an excellent acclimatization activity for trekkers preparing for higher altitudes.

After breakfast, you can start the hike around 6 to 7 a.m. You can take your necessary and valuable things (a day bag). Water and snacks (energy bar) are required to carry with you. There is a teahouse on the way to Ice Lake around 4200 m, so you can stop and drink a cup of tea and coffee. Then, when you come back from Ice Lake, you can eat some soup or light food. Then continue descending to your hotel.

Tips for the great success of your Day Hike:

  • Start early (by 6–7 AM) to avoid afternoon winds and ensure enough time to descend safely.
  • Carry enough water and snacks (Energy bars)
  • Dress in layers – the weather changes rapidly. So carry wind windproof and waterproof jacket.
  • Trekking Poles are helpful for the steep descent.

No. There are no teahouses or shelters at Ice Lake. But on the way to Ice Lake around 4200 meters there is a tea shop so you can eat or drink here. Most trekkers stay in Braka or Manang and do as a day hike. Especially, trekkers who are going to Annapurna Circuit or Tilicho Lake Trek, they will go hike to Ice Lake.

7: When is the best time to visit Ice Lake?

Spring (March–May)

Autumn (September–November) are best for the trek and hike.

8: Is altitude sickness a concern?

Might be, Ice Lake is above 4,600m, so proper acclimatization is essential. You have to climb/hike about 1200 meters. So it is hard and risky for high altitude sickness.

9: Is Ice Lake worth the hike?

Absolutely, The Lake’s turquoise water, surrounded by snowy peaks, is breathtaking. It’s one of the most scenic high-altitude lakes in Nepal. You also enjoy seeing Himalayan birds, yaks, and occasionally blue sheep on the trail.
