Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek
Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek is the finest option for a short Kanchenjunga trek. It provides breathtaking views of Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586 m) and Yalung Kang (8,505 m). Likewise, Mt. Kanchenjunga, at 8,586 meters, is the world’s third-highest peak and Nepal’s second-highest. The Kanchenjunga region lies in the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. In eastern Nepal, this location is the most popular and picturesque trekking and mountaineering destination. It will be the best for your Kanchenjunga Short Trek.
Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek Route
This beautiful trek starts from Sekathum, Taplejung, after a 45-minute scenic flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, then drives to Kanyam and continues to Sekathum. Thereafter, your trek continues to Amjilosa, Gapla, Folley, and Ghunsa Village. Finally, you will reach the Kanchenjunga North base camp, which is located at the foot of the third-highest mountain in the world. The trail is very nice, walking through the jungle, so there’s a big chance to see the red pandas.
With beautiful views of the rivers and waterfall, the trek route follows Ghunsa Khola along the way to Ghunsa village. Ghunsa is a lovely traditional BhoTiya village with sturdy wooden houses. Ghunsa village is a nice place to stay with friendly people and a great tea house. The Himalayas also offer excellent accommodations and delicious food.

Key Features of Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek
- Magnificent flight from Kathmandu to Suketar or Bhadrapur.
- The trip through the Ilam tea gardens for a scenic drive.
- Hiking in a Rhododendron woodland
- Amazing places for your day hikes to Janu Viewpoint or Nupchu Pokhari from Khambachen.
- Your footsteps will take you to the Pangpema (North Base Camp) of Mt. Kanchenjunga, where you can enjoy a wonderful view of Mt. Kanchenjunga at 8,586 m, Yalung Kang at 8,505 m, and Khambachen Peak at 7,902 m. Similarly, you can enjoy views of Twins Peak, Nepal Peak, Pathibhara Peak, and many other stunning alpine peaks.
- Enjoy staying in the small and beautiful Ghunsa village.
- Glacial Lakes, Glaciers, Rivers, and Waterfalls.
- The area is home to rare wildlife, including animals such as red pandas and snow leopards.
Side Trip from Khambachen
After the acclimatization day at Ghunsa, our trek continues to Khambachen. It is a small and beautiful place to stay. If you have enough time, we highly recommend an extra day here. You have two options for your side trip from Khambachen. Especially, the first option is to hike to Janu Viewpoint (Faktanglung), which is a wonderful place to visit.
The second option is to hike to Nupchu Pokhari (Lake) following the yak trail through the Nupchu Khola Valley. Nupchu Lake is one of the most beautiful glacial lakes in the Kanchenjunga region. You can enjoy seeing the reflection of Kumbhakarna (Janu Himal) on the lakes (it depends on the weather). But it is harder and more adventurous to hike uphill.
Hike to Pangpema (North Base Camp)
Finally, your Kanchenjunga trek continues to Lonak, 4,792 meters above sea level. Then hike to Pangpema (5,140 m) first thing in the morning (Kanchenjunga north base camp). This is where your Kanchenjunga Trek’s final destination is. If you have enough time, there is another option to visit/hike Dormo Ri (Dormo Peak) for the wonderful view, but you have to spend a night in Pangpema. It makes your trek more enjoyable and adventurous.
You may take in breathtaking views of Mt. Kanchenjunga and Yalung Kang’s north face, as well as a breathtaking vista of the Kanchenjunga Himalayan panorama, Kanchenjunga Glacier, glacier lakes, wildlife, and much more. The Kanchenjunga Trek is akin to being in Heaven on Earth. As a result, it is the best trekking trail in Nepal for your holiday travel.

Hike to Dhromo Ri (5,890 m)
This day hike from Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (Pangpema, 5,140 m) to Dhromo Ri (5,890 m) is challenging but worth it. It takes you to the top of the Kanchenjunga range, where you can see for miles around. The hiking trail ascends steeply over rocky moraines and loose scree until it reaches a high ridge with views of glaciers, glacial lakes, and a close-up of the world’s third-tallest peak and surrounding mountain peaks. The steep climb and high altitude make the path difficult, but it leads to one of the best views in Kanchenjunga.
The effort is worth it for experienced trekkers who want to see the high Himalayas from this viewpoint in a way they will never forget. If you have a plan to hike Dhromo Ri, you need one extra day in your itinerary to stay one night at Pangpema. It is not possible to hike from Lhonak, so you need to stay a night at Pangpema (K North BC); then the next early morning, you can start to hike Dhrumo Ri.
Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Difficulty Level
The Kanchenjunga north base camp trek is easier than the Kanchenjunga circuit trek. It is categorized as a moderate trekking route in the Kanchenjunga region. It will be better to have physical fitness and experience with high-altitude treks. It helps you achieve the success of your Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek. This trek route is also known as the Kanchenjunga short trek, and the highest altitude of this trek is Base Camp, 5140 meters. There is another possibility: if you have enough time, you can stay a night at Pangpema, and next, early in the morning, you can hike to the Kanchenjunga viewpoint around 5500 meters for the best and greatest views.

We first had GB as our guide on a trip to Kanchenjunga Base camp in 2009, and have subsequently used him in 2010, 2012, and most recently in 2018. His English fluency and ability to get things done is amazing, and dealing with him through email is absolutely no problem. Our trips usually involve project work and being able to give him all the responsibility for logistics frees us up.
