Upper Dolpo Trek

Experience the splendor and rugged beauty of Dolpo that resembles that of the Roof of the World—Tibet! Lying between the Tibetan plateau and the Dhaulagiri ranges, the Upper Dolpo Trek, a restricted trek, offers amazing landscapes and serene beauty. The strenuous trek adds a sense of adventure among its visitors, where the culture of the people is reminiscent of their northern neighbor.

More to this, Nepal’s first English subtitle movie and Oscar-nominated Himalayan Caravan  were also shot in this region. The region is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, the remote villages of Ringmo, and the captivating Shey Phoksundo Lake. The centuries-old monasteries are the main highlights of this trek.

The paths lead to Shey Gompa, which is often mentioned as the sacred heart of Upper Dolpo. The region lies at the base of Crystal Mountain. Every year, hundreds of pilgrim travelers visit the upper Dolpo region to make a Kora (circuit) around the ‘Crystal Mountain.’

Explore Upper Dolpo

Upper Dolpo is a desert area in the High Himalayan region. It is the most remote trek. The scenery here is even more barren than on the Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek. Likewise, the villages are even more solitary and secluded. But the villages and people you meet along the path will leave an indelible feeling on you. The people who reside here, only a few hundred, are the world’s highest dwellers.

But wait, there is more. In the region of Nepal, people mostly speak Tibetan languages and can rarely understand the Nepali languageThe route lingers above 4,000 m for long periods, which results in frigid nights. The striking landscapes, the views from the high passes, and the remarkable insight into a preserved culture make it all worth it.

Dolpo Trek Special Permit

The relatively difficult trekking passes and Special Trek permits limit the number of adventurers who visit Upper Dolpo. Those making this trek have a very exceptional and exclusive experience. You have to cross three high passes: the Shey La (5,010 m), Kang La Pass (5,350 m), and Jeng La (5,220 m). These crossings involve long climbs and long descents.

Finally, the Upper Dolpo Region preserves one of the last remains of traditional Tibetan culture, where the pre-Buddhist Bon-Po religion is still in practice. Eventually, you can hear a prayer flag fluttering at the top of the pass. It’s a 25-day trip from Kathmandu to Kathmandu. The tourism infrastructure in Upper Dolpo is not what it is in much of Nepal. It is a full camping trek.

What is the best time to do the Upper Dolpo Trek?

The best time to do the Upper Dolpo Trek is in spring (April to May) and in the monsoon (June to September). Mainly, the months of June, July, and August are the rainy season in Nepal. It involves monsoons with heavy rainfall, which makes trekking conditions unfavorable in other trekking regions. But Dolpa is a desert part of Nepal and a rain shadow area, too. So, these months are also the ideal time for trekking to Upper Dolpo and Upper Mustang. But this month it is challenging to reach Dolpa due to rainfall in the lower part and terrible weather for flying to Juphal from Nepalgunj.

Upper Dolpo Trek Difficulty Level

The Upper Dolpo Trek is a challenging trek with moderate to challenging difficulty levels. It involves walking over remote and rough terrain, often at high altitudes. The trip takes about 21 to 25 days. The trail includes steep ascents and descents and adventurous high passes. Likewise, river crossings, rock sections, and some places are narrow trails.

Altitude sickness can be a problem, so acclimatization is required. In addition, the area offers limited facilities. Previous trekking experience, fitness, and preparation are important. So, we provide a knowledgeable guide and the necessary staff to make your travel successful. The trip offers stunning landscapes and unique cultural experiences in a remote setting.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Upper Dolpo Trek is a remarkable journey that takes you through a remote and pristine part of the Himalayas. The trek features breathtaking scenery, ancient Tibetan culture, remote monasteries, and unique flora and fauna. This trip offers an unforgettable experience for adventurers and nature lovers. You enjoy your travel from the beautiful Lake Shey Phoksundo to the challenging passes (Kang La Pass).

As well as breathtaking mountain views, every leg of the trip is filled with awe-inspiring moments. The chance to soak up the untouched beauty of Upper Dolpo and mingle with the friendly locals adds cultural richness to the adventure. If you’re looking for a trek that combines natural beauty, cultural exploration, and a sense of adventure, this trip is perfect for you.

Frequently Asked Question and Answers about Upper Dolpo Trek

1. Do I Need Permits to Do the Upper Dolpo Trek?

Yes, you need an Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Permit (RAP), a Lower Dolpo Special Permit, and a Phoksundo National Park entry permit. With these permits, you can do the Upper Dolpo Trek.

2. How much do Dolpo trekking permits cost for foreign travelers?

The Upper Dolpo is a restricted area, so you need a special permit (RAP) to visit this region. The permit costs for this trek:

  • Upper Dolpo Permit: USD 500 per person for the first 10 days, then USD 50 per day thereafter.
  • Lower Dolpo Permit: USD 20 per person per week.
  • Shey Phoksundo National Park Fee: Approximately USD 30 (NPR 3,000).

Note: You cannot apply for these permits individually; you must be processed through a registered trekking agency, and a licensed guide is mandatory. So no worries; Himalaya Darshan Treks is always happy and ready to manage and organize your Dolpo region treks.

3. How difficult is the Upper Dolpo Trek compared to Everest Base Camp?

The Upper Dolpo Trek is significantly more challenging and remote than the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek. While EBC boasts a well-established “teahouse” infrastructure, the Upper Dolpo Trek is a lesser-known adventure that frequently necessitates camping. You will frequently trek above 4,000 meters and cross several high passes exceeding 5,000 meters. It requires a high level of physical fitness and prior high-altitude trekking experience.

4. Would it be possible for me to go trekking alone in the Dolpo area?

Normally, you need 2 people to get a restricted area permit (RAP), so you can’t go trekking alone in the Dolpo region. The Nepalese government needs at least two trekkers in a group and a licensed trekking guide to protect the delicate Bon-Po culture and keep people safe in this remote wilderness. To get the permits, you need to go into the restricted areas. You will need to either join a group or find a trekking partner through an agency.
